Huawei Claims to Have Considered Using the Notch Long Before the iPhone X

The launch of the iPhone X came with a significant amount of love and hate, particularly towards that prominent notch. It did not take long for other Android smartphone manufacturers to copy the notch, and those phone makers also included Huawei. The Chinese giant is the third-largest smartphone manufacturer in the world but there were times when it introduced some important trends in smartphone technology.

The P20 Pro is the first smartphone to feature a triple camera at the rear side and it will not be long before manufacturers aim to replicate this feature on their own offerings. Most of Huawei’s handsets feature the iPhone X notch, but according to it, this phone design was considered by the tech company before Apple used it on its iPhone X

Huawei Claims the Notch Design Was Not Used Because it Thought That Consumers Would Not Accept It

According to Li Changzhu, Huawei’s mobile chief, the notch is something that goes against the smartphone symmetry in Chinese culture and the company feels that it was being too conservative about phone designs before.

“Consumers, especially those in China, like symmetry, and the notch is not perfect in Chinese culture. They like squares or circles—like rounded corners of the display. That’s perfect.”

However, Li did not punch Apple but commended the company for embracing this change.

“Apple using the notch was courage.”

If you take a look at the P20 Pro, it sports vibrant colors and a design that is very unique and fashionable. Though the bezel-less form will always be seen as a plus on a smartphone, what also matters is the color combination and rest of the smaller details.

“We missed our chance to pioneer with the notch design. Because we were too conservative and cautious. We will be more bold.”

The company recently unveiled the Honor 10, another phone that has embraced the notch and will be shipped in a variety of attractive colors. We certainly cannot wait to see how the Mate 20 design holds up.

The ‘Chips’ Continue To Fall; TSMC Cuts Q2 2018 Revenue Forecast To $7.8 Billion, Citing Weak Demand From Mobile Sector

After a brief pause, troubles in Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s supply chain are once again coming to light.  A couple of months back it was reported that the company is facing weak iPhone X demand. While the smartphone’s high price drove Apple’s ASP to record high levels, it naturally failed to stimulate demand.

Therefore, Cupertino was forced to cut down orders for the smartphone in half, which led to Samsung Display having excess OLED capacity for the first time in years. Today, another Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) supplier looks to face a similar fate. Take a look below for more details.

Taiwanese Chipmaker TSMC Cuts Down Revenue Forecast For The Second Quarter To $7.8 Billion Citing Weak Smartphone Demand

Right now, TSMC’s at the top of the mobile processor world. Its 7nm process will dominate for at least a year until Samsung shifts gears to EUV in 2019. Apple is all set to order its next A12 processor from the company, and if we’re lucky, even the A11X. However, recent sales declines for the iPhone X haven’t done any good to TSMC (NYSE:TSM).

The fab’s second-quarter results are due on July 19th, so there’s a lot of time left. Still, the company sounds pessimistic, as reported in its Q1 earnings release. TSMC (NYSE:TSM) expects that revenues for the second quarter will drop to $7.8-$7.9 billion. The company’s revenues for its latest quarter are $8.46 Billion, down by 8.2% over the previous quarter.

“Our first quarter business was impacted by an unfavorable foreign exchange rate as NT dollar has appreciated by 5.9% against US dollar over [the] first quarter of 2017, as well as mobile product seasonality, while the continuing strong demand for cryptocurrency mining moderated the mobile softness. Moving into second quarter 2018, continued weak demand from our mobile sector will negatively impact our business despite strength in cryptocurrency mining,” said Lora Ho, SVP and Chief Financial Officer of TSMC.

Ms. Ho then proceeded to lay out guidelines for Q2 2018. She set TSMC’s expectations below Wall Street Estimations. Analysts expected TSMC’s forward guidance for revenues to stand at $8.8 Billion. TSMC’s next-generation node, 7nm, will bring a host of improvements for power efficiency and transistor density.

We’re interested to see how Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) integrates these on to the A12, especially as the company’s current A11 fails to maintain performance at high temperatures. Thoughts? Let us know what you think in the comments section below and stay tuned. We’ll keep you updated on the latest.

Google Maps Testing Out Landmark-Based Navigation for Some Users

The primary difference between asking a person for directions and referring to Google Maps is that you’ll get a more personal, in-depth response out of people, while Maps will give you a more robotic reply. Very often, when you ask someone for directions, you’re instructed to ‘take a left off the next Burger King” or ‘take a right off the run-down building’. Such instructions are much better, as they offer visual cues for one to follow, simplifying the navigation process.

It appears that Google wants to implement this system into Google Maps, and several users have reported that after a recent app update, Google Maps is no longer just using standard directions such as take turn left, turn right and make a U-turn. Instead, it is now using landmarks and other points of interest to help you find your way better.

google-maps-7Related Developers Can Now Model Game Locations Based on Google Maps Data

So far, only a few users in the New York City area have begun to see the changes. CNET’s Scott Stein has confirmed that his phone offered an instruction to turn at a White Castle while driving through the Bronx in New York. According to his Tweet:

Hopefully, the landmarks it picks out shouldn’t be a part of any advertising campaign, subtle or otherwise. It appears to be a small test targeted at a few users, and it’ll be a while before it is rolled out en-masse, even across one city.

It will be a while before we see it in action, considering that there’ll be a lot of landmarks to go through in every major city. The feature may not even see the light of day if it gets too complicated, but we’re optimistic, as it’ll go a long way in making the Google Maps navigation experience more human.

Xiaomi-backed Black Shark Gaming Smartphone Becomes a Huge Success With 1 Million Registrations

It did not take long for Xiaomi’s Black Shark to garner an immediate wave of popularity. The gaming smartphone that was announced a few days go already has 1 million units of the phone registered.

Aesthetically, it has an attractive green and black combination that the Razer Phone has taken advantage of to increase appeal but there are also a few compromises that went into making such a device. However, its competitive price tag will certainly make people forget about the small things that are lacking in the phone.

At $480, it is one of the most affordable phones you can get that is powered by a Snapdragon 845. The phone even has an impressive the 4,000mAh battery, which means longer gaming sessions without any interruptions. Mobile gaming could be the next big thing in the smartphone market. Apart from high-end hardware, the Black Shark also comes with a gaming controller that can be attached to it effortlessly.

The accessory is easily affordable and can also be paired with other smartphones via Bluetooth. Xiaomi could have realized that this could be a lucrative niche and is capitalizing on it with the launch of the Black Shark.

While it does not sport a 120Hz IPS display, it does feature an advanced liquid cooling technology which will keep the temperature of the phone in check during gaming sessions. This means that the processor of the Snapdragon 845 will not throttle under intensive gaming sessions.

It also has a dedicated gaming button which will switch to gaming mode. Once the user has switched to the gaming mode, the performance of the device will be boosted. However, the numbers alone should not speak volumes related to the success of the smartphone. It is not necessary that all of the registrations will be converted to sales.

However, just 1 million registrations after a short teaser campaign is simply phenomenal. Let us hope that the phone will live up to its expectations.

Apple’s iPhone 9 | Specifications, Features, Design, Price And Other Rumors Condensed

Given the massive influx of leaks recently, it’s time we start to compile things for the Apple iPhone 9. To refresh your memory, the company is rumored to launch three new iPhones this year. Two of these will be upgrades to the current iPhone X. The third will feature an LCD screen and is currently dubbed as the iPhone 9; although we wouldn’t put it past Cupertino to simply call the device as ‘iPhone’. On that note, let’s take a look at the rumor mill’s current status and mix it with our expectations for the upcoming smartphone.

iPhone 9 Display And Specifications:

Right off the bat, the iPhone 9’s display is one feature which surfaces regularly on the rumor mill. The smartphone will have the largest screen for an iPhone so far. The iPhone 9 consistently surfaces with a 6.5″ display, expected to have a 2160 x 1080 resolution. The latter bit isn’t confirmed but highly probable.

honor-10-3-3Related Huawei Claims to Have Considered Using the Notch Long Before the iPhone X

However, this won’t be OLED as Apple is also rumored to continue the tradition of IPS LCDs with the smartphone also making the iPhone 9 as the smartphone with the largest IPS LCD panel, only to be beaten by the 6.5″ rumored OLED panel for the iPhone Xs Plus.

For specifications, the iPhone will house Apple’s A12 processor and 3GB RAM (rumored). This chip will be manufactured by TSMC on its first 7nm iteration which using standard lithography. If you thought the A11 packed a power punch, do wait for the A12. Apple’s current high-end processor is a power hog, a fact we’re sure keeps a lot of folks up at night.

While we’ve got little details for the A12 right now, it’s not that hard to make a rough estimate of what to expect from it. The A11 is manufactured on 10nm that decreases the distance between individual transistors, allowing it to decrease area by 30%. The A11 also packs 4.3 billion transistors, 1 billion more than its predecessor, in a smaller area. This increased number also allows Apple to equip the SoC with more cores.

Related The ‘Chips’ Continue To Fall; TSMC Cuts Q2 2018 Revenue Forecast To $7.8 Billion, Citing Weak Demand From Mobile Sector

So by all reasonable estimates, the A12 will have at least a similar transistor count increase as 7nm allows for a further 20% reduction in die area according to TSMC’s estimates. Apple will definitely pay attention to the chip’s performance controller, especially to improve power consumption. Core count should stay the same, as Apple will utilize the 7nm jump to improve power efficiency.

The iPhone 9 will also feature Full Active display panels, which will compensate for using LCD panels on the smartphone. Full Active displays allow for a higher pixel density and taller frames. The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 uses the panels, and it’s got an amazing display.

Finally, Chinese sources expect that the iPhone 9 will feature an external touch panel in order to compensate for the larger screen size. This will increase thickness, increase weight and reduce visibility as in-cell panels integrate digitizers and glass panels. Right now, this sounds hogwash as it’s highly unlikely for Apple to move back with the iPhone 9. Since we’ll continue to update this post, keep checking in.

An image shared by KGI’s Ming-Chi Kuo in January also displays an ‘Out-cell’ display touch, but we’re not sure whether he’s referring to external touch panels.

TrueDepth, FaceID, 3D Touch, Rear Camera, Design & Price:

Here, things will get interesting. A lot of sources believe that Apple will remove 3D Touch this year from all iPhones. It’s from KGI’s Ming-Chi Kuo, so we’re forced to take it seriously. The logic behind this is that the feature isn’t very popular with developers and does not prove cost-effective for Apple either.

Apple will introduce its proprietary TrueDepth setup on the smartphone, which will cement Touch ID’s replacement across all three iPhones for this year. At its rumored price point, this upgrade will disappoint a lot of users and might result in decreased shipments for the smartphone. Apple also expects the iPhone 9 to be its best seller for the 2018 smartphone crop.

Design wise, the smartphone will resemble this year’s iPhone X externally. However, it will also feature several changes in order for Apple to justify a lower price point. Some sources believe that the smartphone will house a metal back, which might end up removing wireless charging from the equation.

The iPhone 9 will not feature a stacked logic board or an L-configuration for its batteries. Apple is looking into polymer-based Flexible Printed Circuit Boards (FPCBs) for the 2018 iPhone lineup, but it’s unclear whether the iPhone 9 will feature them. FPCBs will mark an important step in improving the iPhone lineup’s thermal performance constraints. A fresh report from Ming-Chi Kuo also claims that Apple will launch a dual-SIM iPhone 9 to cater Eastern, especially Chinese markets.

The pricing for this rumored smartphone is one of its most attractive points. Apple’s decision to charge $1000 for the base iPhone X model didn’t do well with users. While ASP saved Cupertino, user interest declined. Now, Apple looks to encourage TrueDepth’s market adoption. The iPhone 9 will be priced at either $700 or $750; both of which are based on recent reports and corroborate earlier ones as well.

Finally, some sketchy claims report that an iPhone 9 Plus is in the works and Apple will use Intel’smodems on the smartphone. Both of these should be treated with as much salt as available. We’ll keep on updating this post, so bookmark it if you must. There’s a lot of time left until September and details will further clear out. Till then, stay tuned and let us know what you think in the comments section below. We’ll keep you updated on the latest.

Out Of All Companies, Facebook Is Looking To Design Custom ASICs And FPGAs; Company’s Latest Job Listing Requires Heavy Duty Design Knowledge

Well, folks, we’ve got some interesting news for you today. After rumors that Apple is looking to switch from Intel’s x86 to ARM64 for the Mac, now another company also wants to design its custom hardware. And no, it’s not Google. Out of all other companies, it’s Facebook who now wants to enter the hardware race. Mark Zuckerberg’s beloved social network gained infamy recently after it was discovered that user data might have been used unethically. However, this hasn’t stopped Facebook from moving forward. Take a look below for the details.

Facebook Posts Job Listing For Manager ASIC Development Ahead of Oculus VR Launch; Vague Wording For Listing Makes End Goal Of Potential Hires Unclear

The recent congressional hearings for Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg did all of us a lot of good. Users finally became aware of the extent of data Facebook has on them, and the potential for misuse. Now, the company is looking to further expand its portfolio of services. The listing, a screenshot of which you can see below is diverse.

delete-facebook-data-2Related Facebook Gets Shadier: Quietly Tries to Exclude 1.5 Billion Users from Privacy Protections

The job will be application specific, with the potential hiree expected to cater microarchitectural needs. Interestingly, the social network also requires the engineer to have proficiency in Hardware Description Languages (HDLs).

HDLs are the building block of integrated circuits, as they control how the silicon in question will perform. They’re used to perform Register Transfer Level (RTL) operations. These, enable the final design of physical hardware, allowing engineers to model possibilities and design options.

qualcomm-34Related Qualcomm’s Steve Mollenkopf Is Good For His Word; Company Will Lay Off 1500 Employees As Part Of CEO’s Promised Cost Reduction Program

This listing follows an earlier one posted nearly a month back, which required an ASIC/FPGA Design Engineer. It’s unclear as to what ends Facebook hopes to achieve with custom processors. Is the company looking to enter consumer electronics? Smart speakers, for example, are a hit product as demonstrated by the Amazon Alexa.

Or, is the company looking for custom hardware to use on its servers? That would end up helping security by quite a bit. One thing that the job listing does mention is that the chip will be used for Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. The applications as we mentioned above are truly diverse.

If it were up to us, we’d recommend that Facebook use this expertise to develop smart glasses. It’s one niche that hasn’t been targetted successfully and Facebook can make it work given its expertise with collecting user data. Of course, convincing users to wear such glasses is the topic for another debate. Thoughts? Let us know what you think in the comments section below and stay tuned. We’ll keep you updated on the latest.

iPhone 9 With 6.1-Inch LCD Screen Could Feature a Dual-SIM Option & Cost Less Than an iPhone 8

If we are going according to the chronological naming of the iPhone, the 6.1-inch LCD model is expected to be called the iPhone 9 and will carry a much smaller price compared to the rest of the counterparts scheduled to arrive in September. However, what could be its pricing? Turns out that it might feature a price tag that is cheaper than the iPhone 8 while also presenting a great deal of convenience for future customers.

iPhone 9 With 6.1-Inch LCD Could Cost $550 – Dual-SIM Model Could Be Sold in the $650 and $750 Range

A new investor note issued by popular KGI Securities Ming-Chi Kuo states some valuable information about the iPhone 9, or the model that is going to feature an LCD screen and a near bezel-less panel. Where the iPhone 8 costs $699 for the base model, the iPhone 9 could cost between $550 and $650 for the single SIM version, with the dual-SIM version starting from $650 and go up to $750 if you decide to pick up a higher storage version.

tsmc_semiconductor_fab14_production_4-3Related The ‘Chips’ Continue To Fall; TSMC Cuts Q2 2018 Revenue Forecast To $7.8 Billion, Citing Weak Demand From Mobile Sector

The dual-SIM version will be extremely convenient for customers who like to carry around multiple numbers in a single handset. This practice is often seen in developing markets. Kuo also remains positive on the sales outcome of this particular model. According to the analyst, the iPhone 9 could see 100 million to 120 million units sold between and third quarters of 2018 and 2019.

While it is certainly doable to get the LCD model down to that price point, it could mean certain doom for the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. Most customers will want to get their hands on the latest iteration of the iPhone thanks to its increased performance and better design. This will also mean that Apple will have to reduce the price of the iPhone 8 to at least $500 to get consumers to purchase older-generation devices.

Do you think Apple will be able to get the price tag down to such a level? Tell us your thoughts down in the comments.
